San Jose is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse cities in the country and few cities have as successfully assimilated such a broad range of cultures. More than half of San Jose residents speak more than one language at home and approximately 36% of all residents are foreign-born.[1] Overall, the city’s population is 33.2% Hispanic, 31.7% Asian, 28.7% White, 2.9% African American, and 3.5% other.[2]

San Jose is one of the most affluent cities in the entire country, with the highest median household income ($86,800) of any major metro areas in the U.S.[3] San Jose residents also enjoy an ideal climate, with more than 300 days of sunshine annually. Temperatures average in the ’70s during the summer and the ’50s during the winter.

There are hundreds of distinct neighborhoods in San Jose, from the historic port community of Alviso in the North to the bucolic Coyote Valley in the South, and Diablo range foothills (crowned by the Lick Observatory atop Mount Hamilton) along the city's eastern border. In between, Downtown San Jose serves as the region’s entertainment and cultural center, providing seemingly endless dining options, a robust arts and nightlife scene, and numerous festivals, parades, and celebrations each year. San Jose also is home to one of America’s last intact Japantowns.

(2010 U.S. Census population: 945,942).

San Jose was founded on November 29, 1777 as Pueblo de San Jose, the first civilian settlement in California.

San Jose became the 1st incorporated city in California on March 27, 1850 and served as the state's first capital (1849 to 1851).

San Jose spans 178.2 square miles and is the county seat for Santa Clara County.
